GENERAL DRESS CODE PHILOSOPHY
As a Christian school we desire our families and overall ministry to reflect
"Christ likeness". Although a handbook is perceived to be a listing of
policies and procedures, we desire for it to also reflect the spirit of this
ministry, with modesty, neatness, and discretion. A dress code is
established to remind parents and students that dress and appearance must be
in good taste, and not a distraction to the operation of the school and its
purpose of learning.
K-3 & K-4 Dress Code
Approved TCS wearing apparel will come from Sir Walter Uniform of Merritt
Island, phone 321-459-0646. All uniforms must be purchased through Sir
Walter. Please label all clothing with a permanent marker.
Students in K3 and K4 are required to wear navy blue or khaki culottes,
jumpers, or pants (for girls) and navy blue or khaki pants (for boys). Boys
and girls must wear the pullover collared polo school uniform with shirt
tucked in.
Students are asked to dress in a conservative manner and not to dress or
adorn themselves in a way that identifies them with anti-Christian or
rebellious groups. Please think of our child’s comfort and provide simple
clothing that is free of complicated fastenings and that is appropriate for
all Center activities. Please remember our changeable weather and dress your
child accordingly. In times of cold weather, students can wear TCS
embroidered sweatshirts, sweaters, or jackets.
Appropriate footwear is required. Shoes/ sneakers must be properly tied.
Socks must be worn. Sandals and open-toed shoes are not permitted. No cowboy
boots or sandals should be worn at school. Cowboy boots and sandals are a
safety issue. Please make sure that the bottoms of all shoes are not slick;
rubber soles are best.
BOYS: All boys will be required to have haircuts on a regular basis.
Hair should be out of the eyes, off the ears, above the collar and
semi-tapered. To further define this area, the following items are NOT
acceptable: shaved heads, ponytail, tats, asymmetrical cut, and bi-level,
braids or dred locks. Boys are not permitted to wear earrings.
GIRLS: All girls will be required to have conservative hairstyles. The
maximum number of earrings allowed are two per ear.
ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL
All children coming to the Center must be brought to the classroom, signed
in by a parent or another adult designated by the parent, and left in the
supervision of a teacher. No older siblings may sign the child out. Please
let your child know when you are leaving and do not try to sneak out; this
will make it easier on your child. Please be sure to sign your child in and
out each day at the check in/out center.
No child will be released to a person not authorized by a parent to pick the
child up. We must have written authorization for changes regarding who my
pick up your child. Please keep your list up to date. All persons who are
not recognized by the teacher will be asked for identification.
NO CHILD WILL BE RELEASED TO ANYONE’S CARE WHO CANNOT PRESENT PROPER
ID.
Any person who refuses to show proper I D will be asked to leave
immediately. This policy is for the protection of your child and is not
meant to offend anyone. Please keep your emergency and pick up list up to
date. In such cases where there is a restraining order of any kind, please
make this known to the director and the child’s teacher.
Each day the child’s work or "notes home" will be placed in the child’s
cubby. Please be sure to check your child’s cubby each day and take all
paper work with you. If by chance your child has had a wetting accident that
day, you will find their clothing wrapped in a plastic bag. Please take
these clothes home with you and bring another change of clothing the next
day your child attends.
All children who stay for naptime should take their nap items home with them
at the end of each week to be washed and brought back at the beginning of
the next week.
CONDUCT
"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink,
or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."
I Corinthians 10:31
King’s Kids Preschool is dedicated to the training of boys and girls through
a Christ-centered program. Attendance at King’s Kids is a privilege and not
a right. This privilege may be forfeited if a student does not conform to
the standards and regulations of the school. The administration may request
the withdrawal of any student at any time whom, in the opinion of the
Center, does not fit into the spirit of regulations of King’s Kids. The
following guidelines have been established to provide for student safety and
an orderly environment.
-
Prompt obedience, following directions, respect, and a willingness to
adhere to the rules of the school are expected at all times.
-
Polite and courteous speech is stressed and expected at all times.
Students must refrain from swearing and using indecent language.
-
There is to be no pushing, kicking hitting, shoving, taunting,
ridiculing or other abuse of fellow students and teachers. A child who
bites will be withdrawn on the third offense.
-
Students are to conduct themselves in an appropriate and friendly manner
with those of the opposite sex. There is to be no physical contact
between boys and girls at King’s Kids.
-
Students are not allowed to leave an area of the campus without teacher
or parent supervision.
-
Students are not allowed to open outside doors, gates, or climb fences.
-
Chewing gum is not permitted at school.
-
Toys are not allowed to be brought to school except for special sharing
days. On sharing days, the item will be stored in the child’s cubby.
-
Students who abuse or damage school property, whether willfully or
accidentally, will be required to pay for the damage.
-
No guns, knives or weapons are allowed at school. Children will not be
allowed to make their own version at school from the play toys to
imitate such weapons.
In some cases, a child’s behavior changes because there has been some kind
of change in the home. If you child is experiencing conduct problems and you
feel it is due to these changes, please notify your child’s teacher.
Sometimes these conduct changes occur because there has been a death in the
family or a new baby has been born. You do not have to discuss anything in
detail, but giving your child’s teacher an idea of how to better help your
child may help the conduct problem in the classroom.
We use positive discipline, and guide the children toward acceptable actions
and words rather than focusing on the "don’ts". Each class has a reward
system that is implemented on a daily basis by the classroom teacher.
The Preschool Department reserves the right to require a parent to pick up
their child within an hour of being called due to an excessive behavioral
situation. A mandatory one-day suspension will occur if the student is not
picked up within the hour. Corporal punishment is prohibited by all staff.
A comprehensive discipline policy will be handed out at open house for the
parents to read and sign. Our goal is to have every child achieve positive
growth in all areas. We must work together to guide each child toward
personal success.
DISCIPLINE
"He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city
that is broken down, and without walls."
Proverbs 25:28
Proverbs 25:28 refers to self-discipline, which comes through Christian
character. It is the purpose of the disciplinary system to aid young people
in the development of Christian character. The Scripture says that all
things should be done "decently and in order" (I Corinthians 15:40). Thus,
at King’s Kids Preschool, discipline is maintained which is firm and
consistent, yet tempered with love. Teachers maintain standards of behavior
in the classroom through kindness, love, and a genuine concern for their
students. Misbehavior is dealt with in the following ways.
-
The teacher will speak to the child concerning the area of disobedience.
-
The teacher will either remove the child from the privilege (such as
coloring or swinging) or send the child to time-out for a duration that is
appropriate to their age.
-
The child may be placed in time-out a second time of the teacher may write
a note home to the parents.
-
The child is sent to the Director’s office to talk with her.
-
The child’s parents are called and notified of misbehavior.
** In some cases when the children reach the four-year old class, their name
may be written on the chalkboard for behavior whether it be good or bad, or
the child may have a chart with his or her own name on it, depicting what
sort of day they had in school that day.
Good behavior is dealt with tin the following way:
-
Verbal praise
-
Notes and telephone calls home
-
Class awards (such as stickers or prize box)
ILLNESS
Your child’s health is a matter of major importance to all of us. Upon
enrollment, you must file a health form (physical) signed by a physician
with us. Children are also required to have the standard immunizations. At
the time of enrollment, you must bring your child’s immunization record with
you. Please let King’s Kids know upon enrolling if you child has an allergy
that could endanger his or her health while in school.
For cuts and scrapes we wash and clean the area. Your child will be sent
home if he appears to have symptoms of illness during the day. In such
cases, he is immediately isolated from the other children and a parent is
contacted and expected to come immediately. If your child is sent home
during the day due to having a fever, the child cannot return until he or
she awakes in the morning without a fever. Your child should be free of a
fever for 24 hours before returning. A child may return to school if he is
on an antibiotic once his symptoms have subsided.
A child with any of the following symptoms should not be in school for his
or her own health and the health and welfare of others:
-
has or had a fever upon waking in the morning.
-
a heavy cold, including a constant cough and a heavy, non-clear nasal
discharges
-
symptoms of an intestinal upset (throwing up) or diarrhea
-
symptoms of a possible communicable disease. (These are usually
sniffles, reddened eyes, sore throat, headache and abdominal pain, and
rash, plus a fever.)
PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL AT ONCE IF YOUR CHILD HAS A COMMUNICABLE DISEASE:
strep throat, pink eye, chicken pox, scarlet fever, conjunctivitis, etc.
Please examine your child each day before sending him to school. If he has
been ill during the night, please keep him home the next day. If you child
is not well enough to go outside or has to be given "over the counter"
medication, he or she is not well enough to be at school. Please notify
the school by 8:30am each day your child does not plan to attend school.
An emergency vehicle will be called in the event of serious accident or
illness. For lesser needs, we will ask the parent to arrange transportation
to the doctor or hospital.
MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION GUIDELINES
State law requires certain procedures to be followed in the administration
of medications, vitamins and herbs at school. Medication administration
authorization forms are located in the school office. Parents are to
supply all medications, vitamins and herbs in the original container.
All medications, vitamins and herbs will be kept in the school office.
Expired medications, vitamins and herbs will not be given. All medications,
vitamins and herbs not picked up by the end of the school year will be
destroyed.
Prescription medications require the pharmacy label and must be in the
original container. If your doctor gives you a sample, please request
written instructions and information you can give to us regarding the
medication. Formal authorization is required. If ordered for four times a
day, we will give a lunchtime dose. We will not administer medications that
can be given at home before and after school (i.e. once, twice or three
times a day).
Non-prescription medications, vitamins and herbs are to be in the original
container. Formal authorization is required. This includes cough drops and
Tylenol. This applies to all students on campus.
Narcotic pain relievers are not allowed on campus or on school sanctioned
trips.
When students are away from school but still on a school sanctioned activity
the official school personnel in charge of the activity will administer only
prescription medications with proper authorization and documentation.
Parents of students who require medication are encouraged to attend the
activity and administer the medication themselves. Under no circumstances
are parents to administer medication to students other than their own
children.
The first dose of medication needs to be taken at home. If it is an
antibiotic 24 hours need to pass before attending school.
Children with temperatures above 100.0, vomiting, or having diarrhea at home
should not be brought to school. Your child will need to remain home until
symptom free (no fever, stopped vomiting, no diarrhea) without taking
medication to relieve the symptoms for 24 hours. If an episode occurs at
school, they will not be allowed to remain at school. We will call you
to pick up your child; if we cannot reach you we will call your emergency
contacts.
Children with rashes, eye drainage, excessive cough, or nasal drainage
should remain at home unless they have seen the doctor and have a note
stating that they are free of communicable disease. If an episode occurs
at school, they will not be allowed to remain at school. We will call
you to pick up your child; if we cannot reach you we will call your
emergency contacts.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Each day is a unique teaching/learning experience. Attendance is compulsory
unless unavoidable - illness, etc. Excessive absences may result in your
child not being able to adjust to the teacher, other students, or to the
classroom routine. It may also result in poor academic achievement. If there
are excessive absences, a parent-teacher-director conference will be called.
BIRTHDAYS
Birthdays are a special occasion for young children. We encourage and
welcome parents to send in fruit or cookies. The students will share these
treats with their classmates during snack time. We are not able to
accommodate long parties due to our busy schedule and children have a hard
time understanding why their birthday party was not the same as another
child’s. The school is not allowed to give out addresses for home parties
and any child bringing invitations to school inviting fellow classmates to a
home party must have an invitation for each student in the class. Please
notify the teacher in advance if you would like to send in special treats.
CHANGE OF CLOTHES
All children are REQUIRED TO HAVE A CHANGE OF CLOTHING in case of
accidents, which vary from wetting to spills. If at any time, the child is
in need of another change of clothing and there are not any available in the
cubby, the parent will be asked to bring a change of clothing over to the
preschool.
CLASS PARTIES
All parties here at the Center will be Christ oriented. Class parties will
be held for major holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and
Valentine’s Day. Instead of a Halloween party, we will have a Harvest Party
where we will celebrate the Lord of the harvest. Parents will be asked to
help with supplies and refreshments whenever possible.
CONFERENCES
Telephone conferences are scheduled at any time a teacher believes it is
important, or at any time a parent wishes to have one. If you wish to talk
to a teacher, please call the school office at 321-269-2837 and leave a
message, and the teacher will return your call. If a telephone call cannot
solve the situation, the teacher will schedule a conference. Please
follow the above procedure and do not engage the teachers in discussion
before, during, or after class, when attention needs to be with the
students.
DROP OFF / PICK UP
All Preschool students should be dropped off and picked up by a parent or
authorized person over eighteen. NO student should be allowed to walk to
class alone. Please enter the building through the main entrance in the
preschool building. The covered driveway may be used for inclement weather
only.

EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER
All student files should contain at least two alternate emergency numbers in
case something happens to a student and parents cannot be reached by phone.
If there are any changes in these numbers please notify the school of the
new numbers. It is very important that current numbers are on hand at all
times.
FIELD TRIPS
The purpose of a field trip is to enhance and add to the classroom
educational program by offering experiences, which cannot be accomplished
within the classroom setting. We welcome participation of parents in the
learning process of their children. One of the most common ways that parents
may participate is as a chaperone on a field trip. Please review the
following chaperone guidelines.
-
The field trip is only for children in the class . Other arrangements
should be made for brothers and sisters. Chaperones are there to assist
the teacher in the care and supervision of the children.
-
It is understood that parents will abide by the school conduct and dress
code as a representative of the school (i.e., no smoking, drinking of
alcoholic beverages, unseemly language, inappropriate behavior, or
inappropriate dress.
-
A field trip is not a good time for a parent-teacher conference. If you
need to discuss a problem or your child’s progress with the teacher,
please schedule a conference time when you will have privacy and the
full attention of the teacher.
-
Due to insurance considerations, when school transportation is provided,
all students must travel in the school vehicle. Students leaving with
their parents must sign the trip log sheet.
-
Chaperones should stay with the students at all times even to and from
the restroom. A safety check count should be taken periodically
throughout the day.
FIRE/TORNADO DRILLS
TCS has nine fire drills and at least one tornado drill to ensure students’
quick, safe exit from the building in case of fire or other hazard. The
continuous ringing of the fire alarm signals the drill. Teachers will have
instructed their students in proper procedures. Students should follow these
quickly and quietly. Fire drill routes are posted in every room.
HOMEWORK
As a general rule, there will be no homework given to the Preschool
children. However, at times you will find unfinished work left in the
cubbies because the child was either absent from school or was not able to
complete the work in class. This work should be taken home and completed. In
some cases the teacher will request this work to be completed and brought
back to school for an additional reward.
HOURS OF OPERATION
The Preschool/Extended Care Department is open from 6:45 a.m. until 6:00
p.m. After 6:00 p.m., a late fee of $5.00 per minute is assessed for the
first five occurrences. After the fifth occurrence the fee is $10.00 per
minute. After the 10th occurrence the child will be removed from
extended care. Students who are enrolled in the half day K-3 / K-4 Program
must be picked up by 12:00 noon. Students picked up after these hours will
be assessed the above late charge.
Children must eat breakfast before coming to the center.
LOST AND FOUND
Lost and found articles are to be turned in to the school office. It is the
responsibility of the students or parent to check at the office for lost
belongings. Please label all of your child’s jackets, shirts, pants, shorts,
nap towel, book bag, etc. This will help us in returning them if misplaced.
Articles not claimed within 90 days will be given to a charitable
organization.
LUNCH / SNACKS
Lunches will be provided this year through the TCS Dining Hall. Calendars
will be sent home on a monthly basis outlining the lunches & snacks for that
month. If your child is unable to eat what is provided please pack their
lunch or snack. Be sure that you are packing nutritional food. If your child
has specific allergies please inform their teacher so it can be documented
on the classroom allergy sheet.
NEWSLETTER
King’s Kids will keep parents informed of school happenings through notes
sent home and newsletter. Parents need to read each newsletter and look for
new changes or special happenings discussed in the newsletter. Please
initial the newsletter or notes on the parent communication board.
PARENTAL SUPPORT/CONFERENCES
"And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath:
but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."
Ephesians 6:4
At King’s Kid we know that parental support and participation are crucial
for educational success. We know that ultimately parents are the ones who
are Biblically responsible for their children’s education (Deuteronomy
6:6-9); so we are thankful for the trust and confidence parents place in us
by giving us a part of their responsibility in the training of their
children. The home, church, and school all need to be working together in
harmony for the most effective training to take place. This is why we have
attempted to lay out clearly our philosophy and direction in the handbook.
In this way parents can see the extent to which our goals and methods match
their own. Once parents decide that King’s Kids is the place where they want
their child to be educated, we ask that there be a spirit of cooperation
regarding the policies and procedures of the center. If at any time, this
cooperation becomes too difficult for the parent to maintain, the child will
be asked to leave.
We encourage parents to get involved and volunteer to help in their child’s
classroom for special projects and celebrations. If interested in
volunteering, please see the director to fill out paperwork.
Parents may call and schedule a conference with individual teachers at any
time. There are no regularly scheduled conferences, but if a problem arises,
please discuss it first with the teacher before bringing it to the
Director’s attention. All comments are welcome by the Director and she will
help in any way she can. However, approaching the teacher first when a
problem arises will often solve the problem. Please be sure to speak only
with the teacher with whom the problem arises and refrain from speaking with
other teachers when the problem does not involve them.
PROGRESS REPORTS
At the end of each quarter a progress report will be sent home for parents
to review. These reports are not intended to grade the children’s own
personal work, but to give the parent an idea of what their child is
learning, how they compare with other children in their age group, and areas
in which the child may be able to improve to obtain the greatest of
excellence.
K-4 students will be given a K-5 Readiness test in the spring.
RETURNING STUDENTS
To maintain enrollment status, qualifying students will be given the
opportunity to re-enroll each spring with notification and appropriate forms
being provided by the administration. Re-enrollment forms will be given out,
and a designated period of time will be allowed for returning the necessary
forms. At the conclusion of the designated period, the privilege to reserve
available spaces cannot be guaranteed.
SCHOOL CLOSURE
TCS will make our own decisions in weather related situations. We will take
into consideration Brevard County’s decisions; however, factors that affect
the entire county may not have a bearing on TCS. TCS will make a public
statement in the following ways:
TV Channels: WESH 2, WKMG 6, WFTV 9, FOX 35
Radio Channels: 89.3 FM
TCS School answering machine: (321) 269-2837
SNACKS AND MEALS
Your child will be served two snacks each day, one at mid-morning and one at
mid-afternoon. The menus will be posted weekly. If your child cannot eat the
snack scheduled for a particular day, you will need to provide an alternate
one. Your child can bring a lunch from home or purchase a school lunch.
Menus are sent home each month.
STUDENT PICTURES
Student pictures will be provided at a minimal charge. These photographs
will be taken early in the school year. A group picture of each class will
be taken during the spring semester. There will be a minimal charge for
these pictures.
TARDY REGULATIONS
It is extremely important that parents instill the value of being punctual
to their Preschool age child. It is disturbing to the teacher and class when
students arrive late. Bible is the first activity of the day, and we feel
this is an important area in the child’s growth. Excessive tardiness will
lead to a parent/teacher/director conference. We urge the parent to
cooperate in this vital area by having their child to the classroom on time.
Please remember it is embarrassing to the child to come in to class
consistently tardy.
TOILET TRAINING
To be admitted to the K-3 or K-4 program a child must be fully potty
trained and not in pull ups. A child may have a rare accident but it
should not be a daily occurrence.
TOYS
It is very disappointing when a special toy is broken or lost; therefore,
please instruct your child to wait for his/ her Show & Tell Day to bring in
items from home. In order to prevent problems on Show & Tell Days, your
child’s item must be able to fit inside their school bag. Please do not
allow your child to bring any type of sword, knife, or gun to school.
VISITING AND TELEPHONE CALLS
We want you to feel comfortable about your child’s care. Every child will
need a time for adjustment to new surroundings and new caregivers. Some
children adjust quickly and have no problems at all. Other children need
several days. We believe that you have put your child in our Center with the
expectation that we provide the care he needs. We will do everything we can
to make him happy and adjust quickly. We will not allow him to cry without
comfort, trying to distract him, and playing with him. Do not be alarmed if
he needs several days to adjust as well as you. Please allow sufficient time
for this adjustment period.
We have an open door policy. You may drop in to observe the Center at
any time. Please go to the school office first to sign in and receive a
visitor’s badge. Please consider the effect upon your child if he sees you
and if he must experience another separation.
We are happy to receive your telephone calls. However, at times everyone
will be busy taking care of the children and will not be able to stop and
answer the phone. At that time, please leave a message on the answering
machine and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Be assured that if
your child has any need that you need to be made aware of, we will call you
immediately.
If you have to pick up your child during school hours, please DO NOT go to
the classroom but to the school office.
VOLUNTEER PARENT AIDES
We always appreciate the cooperation and help we receive each year from our
parents as aides, both in the classroom and on field trips. There are many
things we could not do without their help. We ask that when you are
assisting in these areas you follow the teacher’s dress code, i.e. do not
wear shorts, halter tops, etc. Again, we thank you for your cooperation in
this matter. Parents volunteering on a regular basis will need to follow
health and safety codes set for Preschool teachers and staff by the State of
Florida. Parents must check in through the office and receive a pass.
YEARLY ASSESSMENT
Parents will be asked to complete a Family, Development and Health
Information sheet on their child at the start of each school year. Yearly
assessments will be conducted in the spring for K3 through K4. A parent
teacher conference will be scheduled to go over all assessment results.
